Description

Beautiful Katana made by one of the most famous smiths from the Mito School. Tokukatsu also known as Norikatsu is one of the most renowned makers that worked as the main smith for the prosperous Mito Daimyo. He was an actual Samurai that excelled at swordmaking, and became so skilled, that he was retained by the Mito family as the house smith. He is a student of Norimune, but also learned from the famed Hosokawa Masayoshi, Koyama Munetsugu and Ishido Korekazu. He is sought after by collectors for having made swords of very high quality, and having a beautiful masame (Straight grained ) hada. This particular sword exhibits these qualities, having nicely structured masame hada with a very classic suguha hamon. The sword is in a very top level Japanese polish, all of the lines are crisp and correct. The shape of the sword shows strength, thus an example of a sword worthy of a samurai. Blade is very healthy and is a very good example of Tokukatsu. Tang is original with a beautifully signed mei. Rated as Jo Saku, this sword shows why this maker is ranked so high, there are also Juyo Token by this smith.
The mounting for this sword is a full mint condition set. The tsuba is a very nice large kinko shinchu tsuba with a well cut design of bears hunting. The handle is very long in the style of the Bakumatsu period.
The fuchi kashira are shinchu with a swell cut design of a peaceful scene. The menuki are very large well done pinetrees done in Goto style.
All pieces are in very good condition and make a very attractive package.
