Beautiful Katana made
by one of the most famous smiths from the Mito School. Tokukatsu
also known as Norikatsu is one of the most renowned makers that
worked as the main smith for the prosperous Mito Daimyo. He was
an actual Samurai that excelled at swordmaking, and became so skilled,
that he was retained by the Mito family as the house smith. He is
a student of Norimune, but also learned from the famed Hosokawa
Masayoshi, Koyama Munetsugu and Ishido Korekazu. He is sought after
by collectors for having made swords of very high quality, and having
a beautiful masame (Straight grained ) hada. This particular sword
exhibits these qualities, having nicely structured masame hada with
a very classic suguha hamon. The sword is in a very top level Japanese
polish, all of the lines are crisp and correct. The shape of the
sword shows strength, thus an example of a sword worthy of a samurai.
Blade is very healthy and is a very good example of Tokukatsu. Tang
is original with a beautifully signed mei. Rated as Jo Saku, this
sword shows why this maker is ranked so high, there are also Juyo
Token by this smith.
The mounting for this sword is a full mint condition set. The tsuba
is a very nice large kinko shinchu tsuba with a well cut design
of bears hunting. The handle is very long in the style of the Bakumatsu
period.
The fuchi kashira are shinchu with a swell cut design of a peaceful
scene. The menuki are very large well done pinetrees done in Goto
style.
All pieces are in very good condition and make a very attractive
package.
